I was listening to Andrea's cover of this song, and I was curious to hear the original version. I had never heard the original before; in fact, despite being an obsessive music fan around that time, I had never even heard of the band The Blue Nile (they were never big in the States, apparently).

I found a nice live version on youtube.

Wow, the original version is really different -- if I had heard it casually, I don't think I would have even recognized it as the same song. Unlike some of Andrea's other cover versions on Lifelines, like They Don't Know and Blue Bayou, which stay fairly faithful to the originals, on this one she really changed the arrangement.

I like both versions: I thought Andrea did a good job of keeping the essential elements of the song but also adding her own touches, such as emphasizing the off-beat pizzicato strings in the verse (which are in the original but much less prominent). Like Dreams, I thought this was a good example of a cover version in which the artist "makes the song her own" while maintaining the spirit of the original.

What do people think of Andrea's version, especially those of you who had heard the original? (I'm slowly reading through the archives of the board, but I haven't made it up to 2010 yet!)
