that others may not have. On the score of religion; Sharon's view of the RC Church in Ireland was shaped by the way in which women and mothers were treated by the Church as experienced by her mother. This was probably towards the end of the era where the Church was so all pervasive whereas its practices had, most likely moderated and modernised, by the time Andrea & Caroline were more aware.

You have to realise that the Irish Free State (what is todays Republic of Ireland) was very poor when it first gained independence from the UK and was unable to deliver most basic social services which allowed the Church (in a predominantly Catholic region) to insinuate itself into the fabric of the country especially with the delivery of social services, administration of public education. The Church in Ireland was also one of the most resistant to the reforms of the Second Vatican Council in the 60's which perhaps gives an inkling as to why Sharon was seeing certain practices still in place in what was probably the late 70s.
