About five years ago the state government built this "digital culture centre" next to our main state library. They have a recording studio, plus a room full of computers with the entire Adobe Creative Suite, Logic, Protools, Ableton and more. There are also free co-working spaces (with amazing river views), a coffee bar, and labs downstairs for people to make things.

The recording studio isn't super soundproof, but you can do a lot with it. I recorded five musicians in there on the weekend. It's free to use, but there was an initial training session, which was only $50-$150 depending on your skill level with Protools. I've been using Logic in the studio because it's similar to Garageband, which is what I'm used to. You can book it for four hours a week, but sometimes if no-one's booked it, you can just go in. The other weekend I had it booked for two hours, then someone after me cancelled, so I got to stay in there another four hours!

Brisbane is about the third largest city in Australia, and it used to be thought of as a big country town compared to Sydney and Melbourne. So I think government is trying to cultivate a big startup and creative scene here.

It's pretty sweet. The downside is that Brisbane feels a little bit away from everything, it gets hot in summer, the internet is apparently slower (in Australia in general), and we have sharks, snakes, spiders, etc. Also, it's nearly swooping magpie season, which means I'll soon have to start avoiding certain trees!
