I was on a cross-country flight this past weekend, so I had a lot of time to listen to the new songs. Like Nabil, I am very excited about the new album and the musical direction the band is taking.

I share Nabil's feeling that SOS is somewhat underwhelming (although I do like the live version better than the studio version, particularly the more prominent piano and backing vocals in the chorus). But I am quite enamored of all the other new songs I've heard so far, especially Song of Solomon, Dear Life, Butter Flutter, and Bulletproof Love. (I also love the acoustic arrangement of Summer Sunshine.) For me Dear Life is this album's Ellis Island -- an understated but moving masterpiece.

The new songs have exactly the kind of feel that I was hoping for when we first learned that T-Bone Burnett was producing the album -- more of an organic sound emphasizing acoustic guitar, ukulele, and piano over synths and drum machines.

Another observation about the RAH concert: most "live" albums and DVDs typically have overdubs and edits to correct wrong notes, missed entrances, out-of-tune vocals, etc. But it is clear from fan videos of RAH that the band's performance was truly near-flawless. I noticed some very minor mistakes here and there, but Andrea's vocals are spot-on throughout, and the band's playing is tight and energetic. That's is especially impressive given that this was the first time they were playing many of the songs in their setlist.

I also agree with Chris's observation from his blog that it shows confidence in your material to open both halves of the show with new songs. In this case that confidence is well founded.

Can't wait to hear the rest of the album!
