Wendy, I know what you mean about the perils of giving feedback, especially on the internet when it's harder to pick up on tone and nuance. Personally, though, I am not easily offended, and I wouldn't ask for feedback if I weren't willing to hear criticism. I figure the best way to improve is to seek constructive criticism and suggestions.
I'll give your suggestions a shot. I might try keeping all of the instruments except the lead part, and then playing different melodies over that. And the Pat Pattison videos look good; I'll check those out too.
