Yes, "turn" may be the word I'm looking for. The example in Peggy Gordon is a slowed down version of the ornament.

I feel like, in Celtic music, the "turn" is a bit more "major" sounding than in say, Americana/bluegrass music (which has its roots in Celtic music, but I'm guessing is influenced by African music. The banjo is an adaptation of an African instrument).

I think the second note in a Celtic turn sounds more like it's going up a tone whereas in other sorts of music it sounds more like a semi-tone jump. I'd have to read some history books to look at how Celtic music developed in the US (I'm guessing it was affected by African music) to know why that is. But it's something to think about!

I know you're not into various forms of country-influenced music, but it's explained a bit here from 26m 35s::

I may have just disproved my theory about the descending triplet sounding more "pop", as the Scottish singer Julie Fowlis does it too at 0.33.

There is still a slightly different feel, but we're getting into microscopic differences in sound now. Also, Julie is a little bit influenced by contemporary music, I think.

Scottish music also has its own upward licks that Irish music doesn't have...but again, that's another post!

As for melismas in pop...I think about them as coming from RnB music, and seeping into pop music. I don't like it when singers really focus on the melismas, as though that's the main attraction, but I do like it when it's an afterthought, to add groove to the story of the song. (Which Stevie Wonder does).

So many musical cultures have their own styles of vocal ornamentation. There are similarities throughout, but there are also defining factors for each style. Eg Indian, Arabic, Persian music (they have their own unique technique called the tahrir), Greek, Eastern European. A person could do a PhD on it!
