The guitar and voice sounds softer and more emotional.
Steve, I agree those those high synth strings in Verse 2 sound dated.
But to be honest, this song in general sounds dated to me - both the demo and released version. Particularly the drums and guitars. It wasn't one of my favourites in terms of production/arrangement.
