IMO they were to desperate to break the US market. It's when they decided (were advised?) to abandon their roots and went 100% pop (synth pop?). To this day I regard Breathless, along with Irresistible, as one of their most infantile songs - I can't listen to those to this day. The lyrics are just ... ugh...
By doing this, they alienated a big chunk of their fanbase. On top of that, the 'new' fans did not stick with them and moved on to something else (they were, after all, a one-hit-wonder in the US).
