The verses for Freefall are in F major, and the chorus modulates to D minor. The latter is the relative minor key of F major; that is, the two keys are related in using the same notes but starting at different places.

It is common for songs to have verses in the relative minor key but then change to the relative major key in the chorus. This makes the chorus sound brighter, as can be heard in several Corrs songs. (Off the top of my head, I think Give It All Up and Humdrum do this -- think of how the chorus in each song has a brighter, perkier sound. There are probably others, which I can't remember right now.)

But Freefall does the opposite: the verses are in the relative major key and the chorus in the relative minor key, so that the verses sound brighter and the chorus darker. This is less common in pop songs, and is partly responsible for the ambiguous feeling that Wendy noted. I think it's a neat touch. Also as Wendy noted, the final chord of the chorus uses the major chord instead of the minor, ending on a more optimistic sound.
