choose to not release an album at all or just an EP. Or some don't even have an album in mind yet when releasing songs (some of these may end up on an album or some will be just unique projects).
A lot of artists don't want to be "bound" anymore to a full album as it gives them more freedom.
All the "rules" that applied years ago have kinda faded away.
Another example is releasing a single on the official day to release singles (which is Friday). Quite a few artists choose to release their single on Thursday or some even earlier (there are "consequences" though).
