It shows how out of touch I can be with current music. I like the song pretty well. I hear what you're talking about in the eighth note rhythm guitar beat being reminiscent of "Breathless." I'd say that the musical connection to the Corrs would be to the In Blue era when the Corrs were brought under the wing of "hitmakers" like Robert J. "Mutt" Lange. In your summation of the NY Times article, I notice that the name Shania Twain comes up as well, and, as we know, Shania Twain was married to Mutt Lange. I came so late to the Corrs that all the albums from Forgiven Not Forgotten to Borrowed Heaven hit me all at once. Thus. my experience did not lead me to make a lot of distinctions in their musical style, but I recall at the forums how there were a good number of Corrs fans who viewed In Blue with some disfavor, as an almost radical departure by the band from their previous style. Although I immediately accepted In Blue because of my lack of previous experience with the band, I can appreciate the point of view that these other long-time fans had towards the pop style influenced by these LA-based hitmakers. It's this style that "Catch Me in the Air" most resembles.
I did a search to find out who wrote "Catch Me in the Air." This is what I found. The song "Catch Me in the Air" by Rina Sawayama was written by Rina Sawayama, Adam Mark Crisp (known as Clarence Clarity), Grace Barker (Gracey), Oscar Benjamin Alexander Scheller (Oscar Scheller), and Stuart David Price (Stuart Price). In more recent pop music, it's not that out of the ordinary to have a song written by a team of five songwriters.
Further info that I discovered: Rina Sawayama is a Japanese-British singer-songwriter, model, and actress known for her genre-blending pop music that incorporates elements of nu-metal, R&B, Y2K nostalgia, and avant-pop. Born in Niigata, Japan, in 1990, she moved to London at age five and later studied politics, psychology, and sociology at Cambridge University. She funded her early music career through modeling and jobs while unsigned. Wow! A Cambridge-educated pop musician? And that genre name given to Rina Sawayama's music, "Y2K nostalgia," got me. Whoa there! What further proof do I need that I'm old?
