I was at Twitter and I got a follow request from an artist named Joy Valencia. I always like to check out the music of any artist that makes an effort to reach out and make her music known. I don't often expect too much, but I gave her music a listen. Wow! I really liked it. So unique in this era of music, and heavily influenced by the music of the 1970's. I went to Joy Valencia's YouTube page (http://www.youtube.com/user/JoyValenciaMusic) and saw her list of influences: Harry Nilsson, The Association, The Beatles, The 5th Dimension, The Zombies, Joni Mitchell, Michael Jackson, Paul McCartney, Queen, Stevie Wonder, Simon & Garfunkel, Shirley Bassey, Donovan, The Mamas & the Papas, The Everly Brothers, Randy Newman, The Beach Boys, Burt Bacharach. I thought, "Wow! No way!! I love all those artists, but that's a very unusual list of influences for somebody making music in 2010! Cool!" It turns out that I really like her sound, which is really an amazing fusion of those influences. She was a music student at the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. Here are a some samples of her music:
WALLET
Lyrics are very clever:
Lookin' in my little bitty wallet
I was kinda hopin' there’d be somethin' in it
But you never know, these times are slow
And all my hopes are on hold
Gettin' groceries cause ya gotta eat
I guess I wasn’t thinkin' on my feet
Cause you can’t buy a cart full of food without a dime
Man, this cashier is takin' a mighty long time
I’m here standin' in line in front of this guy
Hopin' my card’s not declined
And I’m tired of never goin' nowhere
And I’m tired of never knowin' if there’s money in there
So gimme a bright new shiny wallet that will function like it oughtta
Something with flowers or with powers to make that thing work
And California, will you lower your prices someday before I die
Lookin' in my little bitty wallet
You’d think I’d have enough to get a car wash
I’ve been puttin' it off for so long that you don’t even know
And now somebody drew a picture on my window
I feel like the only non-shiny car in this town
But I know it’s goin' around
And I’m tired of never goin' nowhere
And I’m tired of never knowin' if there’s money in there
So gimme a bright new shiny wallet that will function like it oughtta
Something with flowers or with powers to make that thing work
And California, will you lower your prices someday before I die
Money’s funny, hard to control
Watch it funnel to a black hole
Now I’m stuck at home drinkin' this two dollar wine
So gimme a bright new shiny wallet that will function like it oughtta
Something with flowers or with powers to make that thing work
And California, will you lower your prices someday before I die
DON'T WAKE THE LION
IF YOU LOVE ME
IT'S A BEAUTIFUL DAY
Here's a funny one, especially for you Twilight fans!
In the studio recording "When You're In Love" (haha!)
She hasn't yet released an album. She's working on it. However, you can download some of her music already.
