Earlier this month I got another chance to see Ryanhood. A great duo from Tucson, Arizona. I accidently caught them at Lestats in San Diego almost 2 years ago. My friend and I thought they were brilliant. Trouble was after years of touring they took a hiatus of over a year. They had been touring for a number of years and wanted a break to recharge their batteries. The reason I'd never seen them is they mostly played colleges which is one way of getting paid with regularity. The problem for most performers is often most college campuses have people who are only there to hear acts they've heard on the radio or on tv. I was surprised how many stories I've heard from performers who have found this to be true. Seems experienced performers kind of mix live shows at clubs (often little or no pay) and college dates (decent pay, but sometimes indifferent audiences). The story of Ryanhood I've been told is two guys (Ryan Green and Cameron Hood) were in rival bands growing up in Tucson. Must have been a friendly rivalry as Ryan Green went to prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston and Cameron Hood went to school (Arizona State University, I believe). Ryan invited Cameron to join him in Boston and they played around town, even street performing. They are both great musicians and wonderful vocalists. The harmonies are spot on. There are local music awards in Tucson called The Tammies. Ryan usually wins as best instrumentalist (there are youtube videos of him playing classical guitar). Cameron is known for his vocals and songwriting. I've posted a few recent live videos of them at Zoey's Cafe, a great music venue in Ventura, California (about 75 miles north of Los Angeles). Check out this video of them doing "Stopless" and "Appy Jam." http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MMGp8sky4Xk&feature=related I've included some of the between song banter which is another strong point. They are both very funny. I've got more stuff at youtube under my ChorizoQuesadilla youtube name. Check out their website for more info. Catch them live (usually as a duo, but supplimented with a bassist and drummer at local gigs in Tucson). http://www.ryanhood.com
