I think it was November or December when Rick first introduced me to these beautiful sisters. I love a lot of good melody and the use of harmony. I really like the featured video in the AOTM window. They sound amazing live, which says a lot about their talent.

Rick shared this video profile of The Pierces with me:

Like a lot of my favourite new music coming out, there seems to be a returning to late 60's and 70's music as a foundation to build upon. I see this in bands like the Fleet Foxes or First Aid Kit, another duo of sisters from Sweden . I think this is great because it seemed to me the era of folk rock and progressive rock - the kind of music heard for example in the early records of Heart (another sister duo) and in bands like Renaissance - had so much potential as a foundation for music for years to come.

As fate would have it, the musical world changed in the latter half of the 70's when Disco, then Punk and New Wave washed it over, rendering the folk rock era as a musical Atlantis, that thankfully remained on record to be discovered by a future generation not opposed to listening to their parents' music. I read that Allison and Catherine grew up listening to their parents' Simon & Garfunkel and Joni Mitchell records. I can hear those influences, especially in the harmonies. I also get a bit of a Moody Blues feel. Rick mentioned to me back then that he hears hints of Fleetwood Mac, Heart and ABBA in their music and vocals and I agree.

Reading about them at Wiki, I am reminded of why it's good that we have this forum. Though, of course, the forum is not limited to music, I'm pleased that many here take the opportunity to share the music that they discover. It's amazing to read that their debut album was released in the U.S. in 2000 but, as Allison commented, "it sort of got lost in the shuffle" and it got no label support. Thankfully, they found more success in the UK. This is a compliment to the UK music industry, even if it shames the US industry, that some American acts have to cross the ocean to find a place where their music is more readily embraced.

Which, again, makes me thankful for the tips of our members like Grace and Rick to have their ears open for great music being made that deserves our notice! Good job (and thanks again to Cara)!
