Our friend Rick T. has been telling me about Chelsea for some time now. I'd never gotten ambitious enough to go to the Santa Monica Promenade or Universal Citywalk to catch her "busking." Since I'd seen another of his favorites, Megan Slankard from San Francisco and enjoyed what I'd heard I decided I might as well go to the Hotel Cafe. She played with a band composed of an accordionist/pianist, acoustic guitarist who also sang back up, a mandolin player and a stand up bassist. She had the dreaded 7pm time slot known for being tough to draw a good crowd that early. She drew a pretty decent crowd. Most clubs around here require you draw enough people or they tell you not to come back. She should be back. Chelsea is attractive, has a nice onstage personality and has a good voice. She did play the night before at another show I kind of wanted to go to since a singer I know and like (Rachel McGoye) was also on the bill. The problem Friday night was Lucie Silvas (with Jon Green of the U.K. band the Bonfires) was playing Room 5. Lucie is a talented U.K. singer/songwriter and since she's rarely here (she was here 9/2011, her first time), I had to go. I'll probably post a bit of video of Chelsea's show soon on youtube. I got Chelsea's okay to do so. As she put it, "I'm very video friendly."
