When I was in grad school in Chicago, I occasionally went to see the great Chicago Symphony Orchestra play in Orchestra Hall. On my student budget, I certainly could not afford to buy regular seats. However, you could buy day-of-concert tickets for the first two or three rows for something like $6. For a rock concert, these would be the most desirable seats, but for a classical concert, they are considered poor, because the sound balance is completely off, and you have an obstructed view (as the stage is elevated). The sound balance didn't bother me -- it's true that the orchestral sound didn't blend right, but on the other hand it was sometimes easier to hear individual parts, which I actually liked. So that's how I got to hear some great music at low prices.
Cara, you might have worked at the Minnesota Orchestra when Edo De Waart was the conductor. I have several CDs by him and the San Francisco Symphony that I really like. He did a lot of contemporary music (including Steve Reich), and his CD of John Adams's The Chairman Dances is a favorite of mine.
