For me, Evanescence peaked with their very rare début Origin, and then got progressively worse, though I admit I haven't spent much time with their most recent album. The Open Door was largely forgettable with 1 or 2 stand outs..
Lacuna Coil are more rock oriented. They started off well and got better and better - possibly peaking at Comalies, though their newest album is fantastic too.
If you like your 'gothic rock' on the pop side of things, then Evanescence are most probably the ones for you. :)
