Hi Michael, that's a funny story. I saw him once live when he was touring in support of Blaze of Glory (this must have been 1989 or thereabouts). I don't actually remember much about the show, except that he played nearly the entire album from beginning to end.
But I agree that he's a better composer/musician than a pure singer. His voice can be an acquired taste — for example, on this performance on Saturday Night Live, his singing might best be described as being somewhat abrasive. (Love the song, though, and it's fun watching the interplay of the drum kit and Latin percussion. Is it common to have a floor tom to the left of the snare? Don't think I've noticed that before.)

I can't describe exactly why, but this to me sounds like a pop song that would be written by a classical composer. Part of it is because of the synth string arpeggios in the verse, but also because of the structure, I think.
