May not be everyone's cup of tea, but an English friend told me about this late singer/songwriter named Clifford T. Ward. He may not have been blessed with the name or looks conducive to pop stardom, but he certainly was blessed with an incredible gift for music and lyrics. Before returning to music, he worked for a time as a high school English teacher.

Since checking out my friend's tip, I have come to hold this man in very high regard. Clifford Thomas Ward (1944-2001) had in #8 in the UK in July 1973 with his song "Gaye" but much of his other music has remained largely unknown. He passed in 2001 after a long battle with multiple sclerosis. Many who know his music consider him as one of the finest songwriters that England has ever produced.

To this day, I don't think that there is any single album that has collected all his greatest work, so I had to pick and choose favorites as single downloads at iTunes. I'd say "The Best Is Yet to Come" is my favorite song by him: two minutes, twenty-one seconds of brilliant songwriting. This man lived a life of many misfortunes, but he left behind a legacy that I believe will stand the test of time.

Here are some of his love-themed songs:

Home Thoughts From Abroad

The Way of Love

The Best Is Yet To Come

We Could Be Talking

Up In The World

An interview video that I found of Clifford T. Ward dating from the early 1970's:

Other songs to check out are A Day to Myself; A Song for Susan; and For Debbie and Her Friends.
