Thanks, Robert. I'm pretty much a fan of all the 'Celtic Woman women' but have a special "soft spot" for Órla. I think it started with hearing her play and sing Carrickfergus. She's an amazing musician. I have the Órla Fallon's Celtic Christmas DVD from whence this performance comes, which I bought after reading a tweet from Órla about it a couple years ago.
It's interesting what you said about the song's creation around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. I hadn't made the connection between the words of the song and those tense moments of the Cold War. I grew up with "Do You Hear What I Hear" as one played often by my family. Growing up, I think we had a version by Andy Williams (who, sadly, we lost this year) or maybe it was Perry Como - maybe both. My parents had Christmas records from both, and also the great Nat King Cole, and I've since bought the albums on my own because of all the wonderful memories that they bring. I loved the song as a child.
Perry Como's version
Nat King Cole's version of "O Little Town of Bethlehem"
Now I'm rambling, but in the 80's, at around the time of the film Chariots of Fire, I found a cassette recording of the Kings College Choir and it has become a listening tradition for me. I now have this album on CD.
