Steverino, thanks for the additional information on Nolwenn. I didn't know she played a gig in New York just over a month ago (only a few days from the time that Sharon was in NY -- would have been a good week to visit the city). I was surprised to see that tickets were only $10 advance (visible on the sign in the video at 0:31).

The Good Morning NY interview you posted is the only English-language interview I've ever seen her give. Her English is impeccable (she even pronounces "France" with a nasal-sounding American accent!). Considering how poorly many Americans speak any other language (myself included), we should be put to shame by how well people from the rest of the world speak English.

Gary, I think we crossed posts -- you must have posted your original message on Nolwenn while I was composing my post. Speaking of languages, great story about the person you knew who could carry on conversations in three languages simultaneously. That is very impressive.

nightcat, I think actually like that I can listen to her music without understanding the words. It makes me focus on the sound of what she's singing (and French is a beautiful language to hear sung) rather than the meaning of the words. I don't think I'd want that to be the case for every artist I like, but it's an interesting experience for someone who sings as well as Nolwenn, with such precise diction. (I don't think it would work as well for, say, Neil Young smile.gif

Both Steverino and I posted links to this song, Une Femme Cachee (A Hidden Woman), although we chose different performances:

This is one of my favorite Nolwenn songs. There's a fairly subtle key change here. First, listen to the piano part that opens the song at 0:00-0:10. The next time you hear this part, at 1:15-1:25, it's a step higher (you can hear the difference if you go from 1:25 back to 0:00 and compare the two parts). So somewhere between 0:10 and 1:15 there is a key change, but to my ears it's not obvious at all. (I think it's at 0:53 when we go from the verse to the chorus, but it's not something I would notice if I were listening casually.)

There's also a terrific live version of this song from her Histoire Naturelle tour:

This version features what I think is an oud, a Middle Eastern relative of the guitar, which gives the song a very different vibe from the studio version.
