I listened to the music from Sheryl's new album in the two videos that you linked, and really like it.
I can't help but be fascinated how artists like Sheryl Crow and Jewel are aligned with the country music genre now, when in the 1990's (that is, back when MTV and VH1 were about music and not reality TV) they were more "alternative rock" musicians. Things have really changed since then; as if American label music divided into two major genres of country and urban, which an apparent vast chasm between the two.
There doesn't seen to be a vibrant mainstream rock/pop scene any more. In today's music, where would a new artist sounding like a Pat Benatar, a Foreigner, a Neil Diamond, or a Styx fit in? It seems like they would most likely be forced into the world of "indie." I was quite amazed to learn that David Gates of the studio band Bread - very big in the early 1970's - went into country music and sings "Make It With You" wearing a cowboy hat. I guess I've never really gotten used to this new sharply-divided musical world, 'cause I grew up listening to AM Radio when any- and everything popular got played on one station - country, rock, "Bubble gum", soul, folk, film - and, more often than not, it never even occurred to me to try associate it with a genre. I kind of miss those days before format radio. I'm convinced that, had the Corrs come along with their music before the days of format radio, they would have avoided many obstacles that inhibited their goal of conquering the U.S.
But, anyway, thanks for sharing Sheryl Crow's new music, Bea! To answer your question, I really don't know a whole lot about Missy Higgins. She's from Melbourne. I found her music several years ago through her songs on MySpace (I think "The Wrong Girl" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JlvHQ6HHotE) was the first song to capture my attention.
