To my fellow music fans (and to the lurkers out there): Mary Fahl is releasing a new album soon!
I was fortunate enough to win a 4-track advance version that she is currently making available to her live audiences in advance of Love and Gravity, which she has recorded with John Lissauer, who is known for producing Leonard Cohen.
This lady has a beautiful contralto voice and she's a great songwriter as well, which I learned in a movie theatre when watching the opening credits to the film Gods and Generals and being blown away by her song, Going Home. In the 1990's, she was a member of October Project, a Boston-based "chamber pop" group that created some amazing songs such as Ariel, Deep As You Go, and Take Me As I Am.
October Project seems to have had that Goth image thing going on in the mid-1990's. Here's their song, "Bury My Lovely":
Mary left October Project and was signed to the Sony Classical label, releasing an album in 2003 called The Other Side of Time. Around then, the label was looking for artists who would broaden the horizons of a classical label. She grew up being inspired by Judy Collins and was inspired by the way Judy Collins performs such a variety of music. She wrote "Going Home" with the Civil War era film in mind and, being a musical admirer of 19th Century American songwriter Stephen Foster, she went after the feel of a Stephen Foster song.
Though Mary Fahl never trained as an operatic singer, one of the tracks featured on the album is this amazing musical venture into the world of operatic music: "Una furtiva lagrima" (Gaetano Donizetti):
In 2007, Mary Fahl recorded From the Dark Side of the Moon what would be her second solo album, a labour of love devoted to covering (in her own style) the classic album Dark Side of the Moon by Pink Floyd. Here's a live performance of the two final songs featuring just Mary and her guitar:
Brain Damage/Eclipse (Pink Floyd)
Unfortunately, before the album was released, the label suddenly underwent restructuring and many artists, including Mary Fahl, were let go. Four years went by and, with faith in her work, Mary undertook to buy back the rights to From the Dark Side of the Moon which she self-released four years later in 2011. About this, Mary says, "I didn't play out for about two years. I needed to figure out what I was going to do with the rest of my life because it was a very big disappointment." She became interested in bio-gardening, all but giving up her musical ambitions, until her then-boyfriend (now husband) Rich finally convinced her to start performing again. "He dragged me kicking and screaming back out into playing live," she says (see article HERE). There is also an informative interview of Mary Fahl HERE.
So I am thrilled that this new album Love and Gravity heralds the return of Mary Fahl, a voice that should not be kept hidden. I can tell you that there are some beautiful tracks on the album.

A bit more about October Project, which is still making music, recently releasing a very interesting album of music "rounds" (www.octoberproject.net):
"Deep As You Go" (Live concert, 1996)
There's a video featuring October Project here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwHB0piKMIw
I hope you'll explore some of the music that I posted.
