That 1996 performance of "Bury My Lovely" that you posted is quite an extraordinary live performance that comes through even with the less-than-ideal video quality.
Yes, Mary's image has changed from that time. I did note, in reading her Wikipedia article that quotes an interview that's no longer online: "She has theorized that because she had little money at the time, leaving her unable to afford any more than one black dress, and chiefly wore that one black dress to all her public appearances, the media misinterpreted her image."
I like how you describe her voice. It is indeed an amazing instrument with incredible range and beauty. In this NPR Interview from 2003, Mary, when asked about whether she had considered singing opera, describes her own voice:
"I've got this deep, dark voice, and I never had any training. I actually thought I would go into musical theater... I always lost out to the blonde soprano... I'm the light-brown-haired contralto."
