The Corrs Club

Thanks for the additional Mary Fahl info, Steve. Something that reminds me of Runaway...

Loved her two quotes about her wardrobe and losing out on auditions. (There aren't a lot of contralto roles, are there? I know next to nothing about musical theater, but the only notable one I can think of off the top of my head might be Anita in West Side Story (i.e., Rita Moreno in the movie).)

Speaking of musical theater, I mentioned that I first found a 2013 performance of Deep As You Go. To me, this performance with Marina and Julie sounds more like a Broadway tune (which is not a bad thing). But Mary's version has an utterly unique sound due to her distinctive voice.

Thanks for the NPR interview -- I will listen to that soon. I've discovered "Return to Me", which I love and have been listening to non-stop.

There's a moment in Bury My Lovely that reminded me in a small way of the Corrs' Runaway:

Listen starting at 2:26, when the third verse starts. At 3:00-3:02, there is an extra measure. Instead of going to the pre-chorus, as we did after the first two verses, now we have an extra six beats, and then the song goes straight into the chorus, skipping the pre-chorus. This extra measure adds tension -- it makes you wait before the climax is reached. When I heard this, it reminded me of the big guitar power-chord break in Runaway at 2:48-2:50:

I don't know if these are the same kind of structure in a formal musical sense, but in both cases they pull you back from the climax for a moment before releasing you for one last chorus. (And both songs are in 6/8, too.)
