Musically, I agree with you that the music does have a certain appeal - kind of rootsy, folk edginess that you'd hear in, say, Ray LaMontagne. I really like the sound, instrumentation, and production of the recording.
Lyrically, I was expecting some twist at the end that might put what I would consider a more positive spin on the message of the song. But, no! The message of the song (at least from the perspective of the character given a voice in the song) IS that the solution to life's troubles is to turn to the dark lord. Hmm... I suppose I should listen to his other music to see if he's assuming a character in that song. Randy Newman is famous for doing that in songs such as "Rednecks" or "Political Science." In fact, I think Randy Newman wrote a musical Faust based on the famous legend of a scholar who makes a pact with the devil.
