The recent discussion of Mary Fahl on the OT Board made me think of Julia Fordham, whose voice has a somewhat similar rich, smoky quality, as well as an impressively wide range. I wouldn't say I'm a Julia Fordham fan, but I have a few of her albums and like them.
The two songs in the video are from her 1988 debut album. I saw a couple of her videos on MTV and VH1 back in the day when those channels actually played music videos. I was struck by her voice and bought her first CD, which has a mix of 80s pop and jazzy piano/vocal numbers, in a similar vein to other AOTMs such as Nolwenn Leroy, Katie Melua, and Norah Jones.
I don't know how popular she is elsewhere, but here in the US she is not well known. I have a couple of her other albums but gradually lost interest, but I see that she's managed to maintain her music career over 25 years, and she just released a new album this year.
