I noticed, when I visit Hawaii.. esp. Kauai last year when we stayed in a condo.. grocery items "are" expensive.. I suppose it's cos they have to ship most things in.. :O/ ..but then, think of all that beautiful scenery, nice weather, & culture.. I love it so much.. Hopefully you can get a car soon.. ;O)
