That 'Wings of Pegasus' video on Tori is indeed very informative regarding recording vocals in general...

The video explains very well the detrimental effects of the current/prevalent methods of recording vocals versus the "magic" that sometimes happened when the singers were not pitch-corrected to a computer grid that does not necessarily fit relative to the accompaniment that also has its imperfections. You're so right in what you say about the imperfections, Steve. The imperfections - those fluctuations, where, for example, a vocal line may start a bit flat and end a bit sharp, that Fil describes and illustrates in his video, add to rather than detract from the performance of a great singer.

And, holy smokes!, I smile when look at the ToriHolubMusic Spotify playlist (https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1I4lw5Cp1LwBL3tl3TYetx) that features some of her favourite songs. She's a pretty big fan of Lana Del Rey but, otherwise, she gravitates to some of the great music (in my opinion). If this inspires her, and she holds to philosophy of recording vocals that Fil from Wings of Pegasus describes, I feel there's reason to hope for some great things from Tori Holub. Time will tell.

Like you, Steve, I did an audio "double-take" when I heard her covering ONJ. I couldn't believe what I was hearing. She used to have a short of "Have You Never Been Mellow" (that, for some reason, was taken offline) and she floored me with her vocal on the line "I don't mean to make you frown" which, to me, sounded exactly like Olivia and these were high falsetto notes whereas she was at her best singing Karen's lower ranges. I could quite grasp how both could be possible.

Dan Wesley's work with Tori started out with him doing some analysis/reaction videos to her covers of Karen Carpenter (https://youtu.be/Rh-cX0jZkrI?si=KfaFyjrCthLUFzw2) and Olivia Newton John (https://youtu.be/DTy9U2v9Mhg?si=GrhvuO1QJcNj7Yqv (NOTE: the videos are not short ones). But, from there, it started on a whim from Dan, and Tori really came through. To quote Dan him wrote variously in the comments section to reaction videos to his video with Tori:

The reason I suggested to Tori that we do this song ["It's Impossible"] is because I'd seen the clip of when the Carpenters appeared on the Perry Como show and Karen sang one verse of this song in a medley they did together. It was so gorgeous I wished that Karen had recorded the full song. So, I took a chance and sent Tori my piano track which I played in the key Karen had sung it in. I didn't even know if Tori knew the song. Well, imagine my delight when she told me it was one of her favourite songs but hadn't done it yet as she couldn't find a backing track in the right key. Well, as you see the rest is history. I truly believe that on this song Tori completed the great job that Karen started all those years ago. ...Thank you for this lovely reaction. As far as I'm concerned, I just got to collaborate with the greatest new voice in the world. Such a privilege. And yes, she's a future princess in my book whether Disney come calling or not.

I took a totally wild punt on this one with Tori. ...As mentioned in the description to the video Karen only sang one verse of this song in her medley with Perry Como, but it was so gorgeous I really wished the Carpenters had recorded the whole song. So I had this wild idea. I thought wouldn't it be lovely to hear Tori finish what Karen started. So, knowing Tori wouldn't be able to find a backing track in the right key because it was a hit for a man, I decided to record the piano part in the key Karen sang it in and then sent it to Tori. I had no idea whether she'd like or even know the song. Why would a 20-year-old know a Perry Como hit from 1970?

Well, imagine my delight when she responded and said it was one of her absolute favourite songs. I can tell you the day she sent me her first vocal take I was absolutely floating on air. It was everything I hoped it would be and so much more. I had to go out just after it arrived and, on that half-hour walk, I had it playing in my ears on a continuous loop. I'm sure anyone who saw me on that journey would have seen someone who looked just like you did in this video. I couldn't stop smiling. Tori's voice is seriously special. Thank you again for another really lovely reaction.
