Breathless

Information:
  • Andrea wrote Breathless with Mutt Lange during their first meeting at his house in Switzerland. A quote from the Old In Blue Web Site:
"I wrote that with Mutt Lange in Switzerland. It's a bizarre situation, going to meet someone for the first time and trying to write a song with them but it worked out great. It's about tempting someone to make the first move - come on and leave me breathless. You know the scene. The daylight is fading and nothig matters but the two people who are there."

  • Another quote from Andrea on the writing of Breathless from an MTV.com interview:
"We happened to meet up [with Lange]," Andrea said, "and we both liked what each other does, so we decided to try and write a song together. So we did, and the first song we wrote together was Breathless.
"It was a beautiful, sunny day when we wrote it," she continued, "and I think that's very much in the song, because it's kind of high impact and driven and sunny and summery and it's a love song. It's about seduction and how when you're falling in love, you're just enticing that person to go one step further. It's good, good fun."

  • The filming of the video was hard on the band. A quote from a MTV.com interview:
The Corrs have already completed a video for Breathless with director Nigel Dick, although Jim Corr noted that the climate where filming took place was a far cry from the rainy seasons the band is used to in Ireland.
"We shot the video in the Mojave Desert, just outside Los Angeles," Jim described, "and it was shot by a friend of ours, Nigel Dick. We've worked with him on quite a number of videos. We spent about two days out in the desert sun, and we kind of weren't really prepared for the type of heat. Actually, two of us - Andrea and Sharon - came down with sever heat exhaustion and had to be taken to a hospital."
"But it was [still] great fun," Andrea maintained. "Fantastic."

  • A quote from Sharon from an Interview with Trevor McShane about Breathless:
TM: "Mutt Lange, what was it like to work with him?"
SC: "Incredible. Mutt is very focused, probabky the most focused person I've ever met in my life, like a train running in one direction when he's doing an album. I know there's no sidelines, there's no nothing else, and he would work 24 hours a day. He would do a vocal 20 times, 50 times. He would do background vocals again, again, again and again and then to infinity until he gets exactly what he wants. His technique for backing vocals I find very interesting and have used it, taken it with me, some of the techniques."
TM: "Where did you cut with him?"
SC: "Most of Breathless was cut in Switzerland in his home there, and some of it, the violin, the backing vocals for Breathless were all cut in Dublin. And the other stuff that we did was cut in Dublin. Mutt always writes with you so that's his deal. If he's workin' an album, he's writing the album with you."

  • Some quotes from the 'All the Way Home documentary':
Caroline: "Breathless was great. I think we all knew it was going to be pretty strong. But it also has to do with the climate of the music industry at the time and whether people are going to want to hear that, and whether it's the sound of the time. Because sometimes you can put out something you think is amazing, and it just flops, and you go, oh well, what happened there? But I think Breathless did everything for us on that record."
Andrea: "Suddenly we're getting so much massive radio play, and I remember going over to London to try to do all the radio shows possible to try and make sure and secure a number one and what would be our first number one."
Sharon: "We were doing Party in the Park, and it was obviously chart day; it was Sunday. And we knew this was a possibility but we didn't know it was a reality. We got up on stage and we played - great crowd - and then straight afterwards we found out that we'd gone to number one. And that was the first single number one in the UK."
Andrea: "So it was a good comeback. It was very very good, and we had a good celebration."

  • Some quotes from the "In Blue" Documentary on the Lansdowne Road DVD.
Andrea on working with Mutt Lange: "To go out and write a song with him was kind of... was kind of daunting. You're on a plane and wondering 'How is it going to happen?' It's something I always feel... I always have this worried thing about writing, because... It's not something that I know how to do, in a way, as in... There's no method in it, it's not a labour, it's not a plan. It's purely on inspiration. So every time I write a song, I'm thrilled it happened again. But before I write a song, I'd be very scared that it's not going to happen. What am I going to do? I don't know. I had these thoughts on the plan going to meet him, but he alleviated everything. He's a lovely guy, and extremely talented and musical. Basically, we just... When I got in, we just sat and he played the guitar and we wrote Breathless first."
Jim on meeting Mutt Lange at Party in the Park: "Well, we had always been very, very big fans of Mutt Lange's productions, and we got the opportunity to meet with him in London for Party in the Park last year, when Shania Twain, his wife, was performing. And, we just got talking. Talking about song writing, and... We got together and started to write, first of all in Switzerland and then back in Dublin. We managed to write three tracks with him which turned outk we think, very well. One is going to be the first single: Breathless."
Of Lange, Sharon says: "He brought three tracks to the recording with Andrea. He co-wrote with Andrea. It's always amazing to work with a new producer, because they're so different. There are no rules for production at all. He is particularly particular about vocals. He likes to have those completely perfect, so you do them again and again and again. But he's a lovely guy. I think he's a very spiritual guy. He talks a lot. He likes talking to people. He likes getting on with people, getting to know people and understand what makes them tick. As a guy, he's a really sweet guy and he was great to work with."
About the video, Andrea recalled: "Shooting the video for Breathless was very interesting. We shot it in the Mojave Desert It's outside Los Angeles, near the Joshua Tree, which I think is good. It was stiflingly hot, of course, it's the desert. It was a two-day shoot, and a very big shoot. The kind of theme was Mad Max. Jim is flying a plane. We're flying in a plane to do our gig, and we have guys on Harley Davidsons watching our gig. Our typical audience, of course."
Jim adds: "That was great fun. It was an old DC3. It was built in 1939, I think... A Dakota, it was called, and it was an amazing plane. It sits at an angle on the runway like that [gestures with left hand about 45 degrees]. That was great fun. I had to pretend at the controls, pretend to be flying the plane - stick my head out and check that the propeller was turning. We did actually get to go up in it. We were up for about half an hour, flying around the desert. Good fun."
Andrea again: "Anyway, it's going well, but the heat is pretty unbearable, and the second day of the shoot both myself and Sharon could no longer take it and... Almost collapsed. Our manager ended up carrying me into the hospital. The next day we were fine. It's quite interesting when you look at it, you know."
Sharon explains: "I think it's a combination of jet lag, being up at four o'clock in the morning, start shooting at five in the morning and shooting all day in scorching heat, in degrees that most people don't experience. Andrea was delirious, completely delirious.."

Lyrics:

Go on go on
Leave me breathless
Come on [echo...]

Hey... yeah...

The daylight's fading slowly
The time with you is standing still
I'm waiting for you only
The slightest touch and I feel weak
I cannot lie, from you I cannot hide
And I'm losing the will to try
Can't hide it (can't hide it), can't fight it (can't fight it)

So go on, go on, come on, leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me, until I can't deny
This loving feeling (loving feeling)
Make me long for your kiss
Go on (go on), go on (go on)
Yeah...
Come on
Yeah...

And if there's no tomorrow
And all we have is here and now
I'm happy just to have you
You're all the love I need somehow
It's like a dream
Although I'm not asleep
And I never want to wake up
Don't lose it (don't lose it), don't leave it (don't leave it)

So go on, go on, come on, leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me, until I can't deny
This loving feeling (loving feeling)
Make me long for your kiss
Go on (go on), go on (go on)
Yeah...
Come on [echo...]

[Guitar's solo] Yeah-ie, yeah, yeah-ie, yeah...

And I can't lie
From you I cannot hide
And I've lost my will to try
Can't hide it (can't hide it), can't fight it, (can't fight it)

So go on, (go on) go on, (go on), come on, leave me breathless
Tempt me, tease me, until I can't deny
This loving feeling (loving feeling) Make me long for your kiss

Go on, (go on) go on, (go on) come on, leave... me breathless
Go on, (go on) go on, (go on) come on, leave... me breathless
Go on, (go on) go on, (go on) come on, leave... me breathless
Go on... go on!
