Information:
- Humdrum was usually played as the first song during the Borrowed Heaven tour.
- From a Paradigm Talent Agency press release Andrea says:
"It was meant to be a nice song originally," she laughs. "Then it got progressively nastier, about having all these dreams and how they can end up becoming humdrum."
- At an acoustic concert in Kolhn (Cologne), Germany on 1 June, 2004 (at 33:56) Andrea says:
"I'm the only one that's not married, except for Jim you see, so I can have a little laugh at the prospect of marriage, and this is what this song is about."
- From the Borrowed Heaven Documentary (at 35:06) Andrea shares:
"Some journalist said to me that Humdrum is this album's answer to I Never Loved You Anyway, so there always seems to be a bit of an 'F. U.' song on the album, you know what I mean? I didn't mean that! Humdrum started off as... the nature of our lives, and my life, is so active and always moving, that I don't really get time for domesticity and the mundane. So really what I meant was, imagine getting to the point in a relationship where I'd actually take it for granted. I wouldn't notice you'd come in or out of the room. So really it was like going, I'd like this headiness to leave. That's really what I was meaning.
"It's like a skit. I picture Pleasantville when I think of Humdrum, and people being so in love and getting married, and then how the hell has it gotten to that point? How has it gotten to that point where no milk left for your tea is a problem, and that you feel like crying all the time, only the baby is drowning out the sound of your own crying. It's kind of like a satire on marriage. Not that I don't believe in it, but that it needs to be checked."
- Interestingly, the title (Humdrum) does not ever appear in the lyrics of this song.
Written By:
- According to a Paradigm Talent Agency press release, Jim wrote the music for Humdrum and Andrea wrote the melody and lyrics.
