Butterflies

Information:
  • Sharon posted a video on her website about Butterflies.

  • One quote from the video from Sharon: "For some reason, butterflies happened to be on my mind and sort of in and around my life in constant ways just recently, and it made me think of the butterflies I always have before I get on stage. So this song is about performing and how much I love it, and how I love the stage, and the buzz of the band, the humming of the crowd. And that when I get on stage, I feel like I'm flying. It's like you're reaching your full potential; it's like you're reaching your dreams."

  • A quote from a 2011 Interview with Liverpool Live:
Sharon: "Some of the more personal influences for me would be Joni Mitchell who's my favourite all time singer songwriter, she would be a huge influence on this album. I remember when I wrote Radio years ago I was thinking of Joni Mitchell and how she writes and how she runs on her lines and she doesn't box her lyrics in to fit exactly, that's why her phrasing is so wierd and wonderful. So I remember when I was writing Radio I was kind of using run on lines and I was writing it directly inspired by her, and then Butterflies from this album would very inspired by her as well. I think some of the greatest music that ever happened in the world just before and when I was born so I slightly missed it then discovered it in the eighties and nineties. I think late sixties early seventies there was an explosion of your Jimi Hendrix, your Joni Mitchells, your Zepplins, and The Beatles so that's kind of been the greatest music of all time."

  • Another quote from a 2010 Interview with Trevor McShane:
Sharon: "Usually the lyric is something I will start singing while I'm messing around on the piano. I'll find like a word like "butterflies". I wrote a song called Butterflies - I kept finding butterflies in my life. Everywhere I looked there was a butterfly. At Christmastime, there was a butterfly around our table and it wasn't the time of year, and it was sort of out of sync, so I was inspired to write something about butterflies, and it almost comes out before I think about it, and then I have to discover the lyric around what I'm thinking..."
Trevor McShane: "Are they all songs about love?"
Sharon: "No. Butterflies is about that moment before you get on stage, butterflies in your belly. When I took time off to have my children, I missed the road desperately. I more desperately wanted to have children at that stage of my life, but I missed playing music and what happens before you get on stage. I was on tour for almost 20 years of my life so that was more my norm than the other... I wanted to get back out on tour and knew the only I could get do so if I created an album that created an interest, so that people would want to buy tickets."
Trevor McShane: "But you do write about love, I presume."
Sharon: "Oh, yes. A lot of it is love. Butterflies is about love of music."

Lyrics:
I am waiting, I am waiting for so long now
I am hoping, I am wanting, I am dreaming

Like a bird without wings, in my heart I'm born to fly
Like a ship upon a river, I could sail the oceans wide

The stage is ready, the lights are burning
I have butterflies
The crowd is humming, the band is buzzing
I have butterflies

I am feeling, I am touching, I am tasting
I am seeing, come to me so I can be it

Like a bird without wings, in my heart I'm born to fly
Like a ship upon a river, I could sail the oceans wide

The stage is ready, the lights are burning
I have butterflies
The crowd is humming, the band is buzzing
I have butterflies
