Summer Sunshine

Information:
  • Summer Sunshine was first premiered live at the 2004 Meteor Awards in Ireland.

  • When the band performed Summer Sunshine in Geneva in 2004 for the DVD recording there was a technical hitch the first time through so the band was asked to do the song again. A great bonus for the fans attending that concert!

  • A quote from Andrea from the Borrowed Heaven Documentary (at about 27:32):
"Summer Sunshine I wrote on the piano in my house in Dublin, and it has to do with a few different things. This is quite interesting: Actually, I've been to New York. I was there with my boyfriend and we were walking along and I saw a place, I saw a sign: 'The Bitter End'. And before I got to New York I had this song in my head, and I had pretty much the chorus. But I saw the 'Bitter End' and I thought: 'Sweet Beginnings'. So it kind of led into everything. Once you find some works, it just kind of flows then. Apparently, that's the place that Bob Dylan first played in New York, and I didn't realise that, and so that's quite interesting... a story about that. So basically, it's bitter-sweet. It's about a doomed relationship, that it cannot be. So every moment is so precious. That really what it is."

  • Another quote from Andrea from the Borrowed Heaven Documentary (at about 10:44):
"To me the song... and I meant it like in writing it, it's a sad song. It's beautiful in that it's reminiscent on a love and on a beautiful time, but that couldn't be had in a way for whatever reason. So it's very bitter-sweet in that kind of like: 'I want that back, and it's nobody else's business, just ours'."

  • A quote from Jim from the Borrowed Heaven Documentary about the music video for Summer Sunshine - which was shot in a studio in London and directed by Kevin Godley (at about 9:12):
"Basically, it's about a couple that have been living in this house, hiding in this house. And we attempt to break the house down, break all the windows open, allow the light to come in. They're very scared initially, but eventually they're kind of consumed by the light, and everything's ok."

  • A quote from a press release from the Paradigm Talent Agency:
"The opening track, Summer Sunshine = the first single from Borrowed Heaven - was written by Andrea. 'It's funny how you always know when you have a single,' Sharon says. 'When we heard that song we all knew instantly.' It's an utterly infectious summer single and instantly recognizable as a Corrs hit... But there is another side to the track, as Andrea makes clear: 'It sounds happy and summery, but is also quite a sad song. It's the story of a secret love that you can never quite get over - a forbidden love that lives on in your head.'"

Lyrics:
Everyone's changing, I stay the same
I'm... a solo cello outside a chor-us
I've got a secret,
It's time for me to tell that you've been keeping me warm

Just sweet beginnings and bitter en-dings
In coffee city, we borrowed hea-ven
Don't give it back, I've never felt so wanted
Are you taking me home?

You tell me you have to go...

[Chorus:]
In the heat of summer sunshine
I miss you like nobody else
In the heat of summer sunshine
I kiss you, and nobody needs to know

Now that you've left me, there's no retur-ning
I keep comparing, you're always win-ning
I try to be strong but you'll never be more wanted
Will you make me at home?

Don't tell me you have to go...

[Chorus:]
In the heat of summer sunshine
I miss you like nobody else
In the heat of summer sunshine
I kiss you, and nobody needs to know

Ya da... ya da... ya da

To sweet beginnings and bitter en-dings
In coffee city, we borrowed hea-ven
Don't give it back
Winter is coming and I need to stay warm

The heat.....

[Chorus:]
In the heat of summer sunshine
I miss you like nobody else
In the heat of summer sunshine
I kiss you, and nobody knows

[Chorus:]
In the heat of summer sunshine
I miss you like nobody else
In the heat of summer sunshine
I kiss you, and nobody needs to know
